About Guayaquil and Playas

For our international guests, welcome to Ecuador! As you plan your trip to celebrate with us, we’d love to introduce you to two key destinations that will shape your journey: Guayaquil, the gateway to Ecuador, and Playas, our charming coastal retreat where the wedding will be held. Let’s dive in!

Santiago de Guayaquil is Ecuador’s largest city, with a population of approximately 2.7 million people. Covering an area of 344.5 km², the city operates on the US dollar and uses 110-volt electricity with A and B plugs. When dialing Guayaquil, you’ll use the Ecuadorian phone code +593 followed by the city code (4), for example: +593 (4) 216-9000. The city has a 15% value-added tax (IVA) on goods and services. Guayaquil experiences two main seasons: a warm, rainy season from December to April, and a cooler, dry season from May to December.

Guayaquil: The Bustling Heart of the Coast

Guayaquil, Ecuador’s largest city and main port, is often called the “Pearl of the Pacific.” This vibrant city is your likely first stop, as it’s home to José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport. Guayaquil is a mix of modern development and rich cultural history. While you’re here, take some time to explore:

  • Malecón 2000: A beautiful riverside promenade along the Guayas River, dotted with parks, monuments, shopping areas, and restaurants. It’s perfect for a leisurely stroll and offers views of the city’s skyline.
  • Las Peñas: A historic neighborhood with brightly colored houses and cobblestone streets. Climb up the 444 steps to Cerro Santa Ana, and you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the city and the river.
  • Parque Histórico: A unique park blending Ecuador’s history and nature, with exhibits that recreate Guayaquil’s past and showcase local wildlife.

Guayaquil is also a great hub for those wanting to explore more of Ecuador, whether heading to the Galápagos Islands or venturing into the highlands.

Playas: Ecuador’s Coastal Gem

About a 1-hour and 50-minute drive from Guayaquil’s International Airport lies General Villamil Playas, or simply Playas—a laid-back coastal town known for its long, sandy beaches and relaxed atmosphere. Playas is one of the most popular beach destinations for both locals and visitors. Here’s what makes it special:

  • Beaches: Playas is home to some of the most expansive and least crowded beaches on Ecuador’s coast, perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying the ocean breeze. The beach town is famous for its calm waters, making it a favorite for families.
  • Seafood: If you’re a fan of fresh seafood, you’re in for a treat! Playas is renowned for its beachfront restaurants serving up delicious dishes like ceviche, encocados (coconut seafood), and fried fish.
  • Ocean Club: This private beach club is where our wedding reception will be held. It offers beautiful views of the ocean, along with exclusive amenities, making it the perfect spot to relax and celebrate.

Playas offers a more relaxed pace compared to the bustle of Guayaquil, and its proximity to the city makes it an easy and scenic drive. Whether you’re enjoying a peaceful sunset or taking part in water activities like jet skiing and windsurfing, Playas captures the laid-back charm of Ecuador’s coast.

Fun fact: Playas is popularly known as having the “second best climate in the world”, declared by UNESCO in 1982.

How to Travel Between Guayaquil and Playas

The easiest way to get from Guayaquil to Playas is by car, either by renting one at the airport or booking a private driver. The drive is smooth and offers glimpses of Ecuador’s coastal landscapes.
